A late summer release available on Amazon Prime Video is Cassandro, which follows the true story of Cassandro, the ”exotico” character created by Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who rose to international stardom. Directed by Roger Ross Williams, this film features themes of overcoming adversity, breaking tradition, and family dysfunction, told through the lens of Saúl as he follows his dream of being a well-known exotico. Cassandro, featuring Gael Garcia Bernal in the lead role, is supported by Roberta Colindrez, Perla De La Rosa, Raul Castillo, Bad Bunny, and MovieBuffs Podcast’s own Ronald Gonzales-Trujillo. In this special episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, Ronald returns to the podcast post-actors strike and shares what it was like working on this film, and both hosts discuss their favorite aspects of the film.
One of the more interesting parts of this episode is when Ronald shares what it was like working on a film during the pandemic in 2020. This included multiple days of testing and quarantining, which was on top of preparing for his first role in a major motion picture. Ronald got this role without the help of an agent and discusses what it was like preparing for the role and his experience being in a foreign country where he speaks only a fraction of the language.
