DC Studios’ latest release is Shazam! Fury of the Gods was released on March 17th, 2023. Starring Zachary Levi as the title character, this sequel features some solid CGI and directing but doesn’t match the previous installment’s story. In this Instant Reaction episode in the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia gives his spoiler-free breakdown of the movie including plot holes, changes to the original story, cameos, and his favorite character. Unfortunately, this sequel falls victim to the curse of follow-ups but in Tyler’s opinion doesn’t fall on the director’s shoulders. This movie is well-directed and paced, and the CGI is definitely high quality.
Before this movie’s release, the news of James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios and planning a reboot shocked all comic book movie fans. While many fans are excited about this reboot, the negative cloud of uncertainty impacted the casual fans who wanted to see this movie. Although released at a time of certainty, this Shazam installment definitely answers the question of if Shazam will be around for DC’s new extended universe.
